About Us

The library was set up in the 1970’s and moved into its present site in 2009.  It has always been multi-disciplinary, serving all hospital staff as well as students on placement in the hospital.  Staffing consists of one full-time professionally qualified librarian and three part-time senior library assistants.  The library service is provided by Cardiff University for Cardiff and Vale UHB.

Library Facilities / Access

Access is available to all NHS Wales staff and to students on placement

Study and IT facilities:

  • 17 study spaces and a soft-seating area

  • 7 NHS PCs available with 1 networked printer, and 9 PCs on the Cardiff University network

  • IT Training Room with 10 PCs on the Cardiff University network which can be booked for small groups

  • Eduroam and visitor Wi-Fi available free

 

Main Services:

  • Literature Searching 

  • Evidence based healthcare support

  • Article supply

  • Book loans and requests

  • Information literacy support including training in database use.  Please phone or email to pre-book a session with the librarian.

  • Regular Evidence Updates

  • Support for revalidation and reflective practice

  • Binding service (small charge)

  • Photocopying & printing (some chargeable)

 

Joining the Library: 

  • To join the library please visit us in person, or contact us by phone or email 

 

Borrowing Books:

  • You may borrow a maximum of 35 books

  • Loans are for 4 weeks and will renew automatically unless requested by another user

  • You will receive regular email reminders about your loans

  • Books not on site can usually be requested from another library for you

 

Literature Searches:

  • We conduct Literature Searches for research, clinical audit, service improvement, patient information and education

  • Literature searching requests will be accepted by email or phone, or using the form available in the library. Alternatively, you can complete the online request form. Results will be sent to you via email

  • Please ask if you would like the librarian to run the search with you in the library

Evidence Summaries:

  • UpToDate is available to Cardiff & Vale UHB.  There is a link on the UHB Clinical Portal, or go direct to UpToDate for which you will need an Athens account. You can also register for UpToDate Anywhere, the UpToDate app. For this you will need a personal account, not OpenAthens. Please contact us for assistance. 

 

Other online resources are available via the NHS Wales e-Library for Health:.

 

Article & e-Journal Access:

  • Please visit NHS Wales LibrarySearch for access to e-journals held nationally and locally in NHS Wales

  • Articles not available through NHS Wales LibrarySearch can usually be obtained via the library.  Please contact us for help.

 

OpenAthens accounts:

  • To use national and local library e-resources off site or at home, you will need an Athens account.  You can register online or contact the library for help.
